Northern Band of the Cherokees Preamble of the Constitution of the Northern Band of the Cherokees
We the original people, whose ancestors were scattered to the ends of this earth,and who seek now to bring our people together in unity and harmony, to secure, preserve and educate our family and all our relations, the cultures and traditions of our ancestors, do hereby ordain and institute this constitution of the Northern Band of the Cherokees (Group)
Status: The Northern Band of the Cherokees is a Church as well as a group of individuals derived from Cherokee/Native American Indian Ancestry. It is NOT affilliated with the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the United Keetowah Band or any other Federally recognized Indian Tribe.
Eligibility: Members of the Northern Band of Cherokees Group must be of Native American Ancestry or a Native American Community has determined so by the membership committee. Honorary members (Those interested in promoting the welfare and development of Native Americans and helping to educate and instill upon our young, good morals and values to ensure a more productive future) may also be accepted
Application Process: Please return a copy of the application along with a passport size photo. Please keep a copy for your personal file. All applications will become the property of the Northern Band of Cherokees inc. Please remember to fill in all that you know. If you do not know Leave blank.
Allow 1 week for processing. If a dispute should arise due to rejection of your membership, it will be reviewed by the appeals tribunal. Your signiture on the application signifies the acceptance of NBC laws and decisions. Violation of the laws and decisions may result in suspension or cancellation of your membership.
Indian Names: Name giving and other native traditions are sacred to the Cherokee. Names are not "just given or assumed". The Name giver accepts a level of responsibility for the recipients training and behavior. Your Indian name will be given by an elder or a clan mother (registered chief) within the NBCG. It is tradition to apply to an elder for the name. A small token such as sage, cedar, tobacco, a pretty stone , something handmade is nice, is offered to the elder or clan mother, name giver. He or she will ask you about your childhood through your current status to become better aquianted with you. This will enable he/she to give you the proper name.
The elder/Spiritual Leader/clan mother will give much consideration and ask the Creator for assistance so you will have a proud and meaningful name. The name will be given in a formal ceremony by the name giver/clan chief.
If you have been previously named, please provide info as to who gave you the name, when where and by what authority. The name if properly given will be reviewed by the council of elders and most likely accepted and entered on our rolls. If the name is accepted you will be presented in traditional ceremony. Under no circumstances shall a person bestow a name upon themself and present or publish that name as his or her NBCG name.
